As the curtain fell on Man Utd's European adventures last night and we had to accept a sad end to a terrible Season, it was to paraphrase Churchill 'The End of the Beginning'. Firstly, hats off to Tottenham and I hope they enjoy the Champions League next Season. I can console myself with the fact that I can at least revisit the Allianz Arena to watch a team in Red play in Europe. Maybe even knocking Liverpool out in the Group Stages, we can but dream.
Why Churchill I hear you say? What has the legendary Prime Minister got to do with United's demise? Well he didn't create it, he wasn't even playing, he may even have been a Spurs fan for all I know, who knows, but his famous Quote sums up Man Utd under Rubin Amorin.
After the victory at El Alamein he famously made in a speech at the Mansion House this quote "Now this is not the End. It is not even the beginning of the end but it is perhaps the End of the Beginning!" The Allies subsequently turned the defeats of 1940 to 1942 into unbroken victories from 1943 to ultimate victory in 1945.
Now I am sure that many Man Utd fans are drowning their sorrows, feeling sorry for themselves, the Club and blaming the Glazers but you know we don't do whingeing in this Parish, we do fightbacks, we do Turnarounds, we do it it until it works!
Rubin Amorin was appointed mid Season after the clamour for ETH's removal grew too loud. He was apparently the Summer target but wanted to wait until this Summer. He arrived Mid Season and United have arguably got worse. Not his players, not his system, not his 'way of working' - where have we heard that before???
However, the End of the Beginning came last night when United's wretched Season ended with defeat to Spurs in the Europa Final. The league is over on Sunday and at this point he could field the Reserves but Villa might object and nobody wants to see Rashford denied his rightful place in Europe next Season...
The Beginning of the Amorin reign is over. His actions now to rebuild the Club are where the true Transformation starts. This will be the mark of the man, what he does next, not what he has done since November.
From this point on its his Transfers, his Pre Season, his staff, his philosophy and his job to Start the Transformation. People forget how bad United were under Fergie from 1987 to 1989, it was atrocious stuff then a legend was born and the rest was history, just like Churchill.
